 Which Personality Type Are You?
Enneagram
A powerful tool for the individual, couples, parents & businesses

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram is a profiling system that defines and explores nine different personality types. It has a rich history, blending cosmology and psychology to create a unique and comprehensive model of the human experience and the role that personality plays in all our lives.

Whilst there are many layers to this incredible system, let us start with a snapshot:

Each personality type has its own title and host of tools and ideas to assist in navigation. One groovy idea is to associate an animal with each type. Using this association as a way of quickly understanding and accessing the Enneagram is a great way to get started. Different countries use different animals and I was tempted to use only Australian archetypes, but the iconic monkey and rhino made the final cut. Let us go explore the personality types via the voice of each creature:

PERSONALITY TYPE ONE: The Perfectionist
"Busy Bee"

Building a beautiful world that is neat and orderly. Bee desires integrity and to be treated fairly. They struggle with rage and control. Bee medicine is Serenity.

"Let's all follow the rules!"

PERSONALITY TYPE TWO: The Helper
"Dutiful Dog"

Do you want help or support? I'll be there! Dog offers love and wants to be loved in return. They struggle with neediness and pride (that others need them). Dog medicine is Humility.

"Can I have some love please?"

PERSONALITY TYPE THREE: The Achiever
"Enterprising Eagle"

There is so much we can do and achieve - let me show you how! Eagle desires to be valued for their accomplishments, and struggles with deceit and over-inflation. Eagle medicine is Truth.

"Look how high I can fly!"

PERSONALITY TYPE FOUR: The Individual
"Cool Cat"

You have to be cool if you want to hang out with me (but not too cool). Refined and sophisticated, Cat wants to be the special one. They struggle with jealousy. Cat medicine is Equanimity.

"I just want to be myself"

PERSONALITY TYPE FIVE: The Investigator
"Observant Owl"

Pass me another book I have finished that one. Owl desires information and competency. Their struggle is withholding themselves because they don't yet know enough. Owl medicine is Non-Attachment.

"Give me more information!"

PERSONALITY TYPE SIX: The Guardian
"Daring Deer"

There is beauty all around us, we just have to remove all the dangers first! Deer wants to feel safe, and offers safety to others. Fear and anxiety is their struggle. Deer medicine is Courage

"Did you hear a noise?"

PERSONALITY TYPE SEVEN: The Adventurer
"Merry Monkey"

I am not satisfied yet, perhaps we should find another tree? Monkey seeks and craves fulfillment. They struggle with being present and choosing just one thing. Monkey medicine is Commitment.

"Where's the fun happening?"

PERSONALITY TYPE EIGHT: The Challenger
"Robust Rhino"

There are so many injustices that need to fixed! Rhino wants to be protected and offers to protect those who are less fortunate or are endangered. They struggle with domination and seduction. Rhino medicine is Innocence.

"I'll defend you!"

PERSONALITY TYPE NINE: The Peace Keeper
"Warm-hearted Whale"

There are two sides to every story. Whale is the born diplomat, desiring peace on the inside and the outside. They struggle with ambivalence and inertia. Whale medicine is Right-Action.

"Don't worry, be Happy"

A little deeper

Once you have determined your type, a big part of the Enneagram is exploring the unconscious strategies that govern our behaviour.

Unconscious strategies and mechanisms don't want to be seen - they do everything they can to disguise, divert, or distract us from the real motives and truth's that drive us. Unconscious behaviour is like pouring water into a sieve and hoping it will fill up. It does not matter how much attention we get, how much love we receive, or how many "likes" we accomplish - until we shine light on the unconscious behaviour that subtly and not-so-subtly dominates our lives, we continue to use strategies that somehow never quite fill us up.
